National Association Webcast Announcement
June 25, 2010
As you all know, the National Broadband Plan (NBP) has some serious ramifications for telecommunications companies. I am very pleased to see NECA, NTCA, OPASTCO, and WTA working together on this most important issue. This national coalition is putting on two webinars in the next few weeks on the NBP and what the coalition is doing to address the disparities in the plan for rural consumers. I strongly encourage you to attend one of the webinars for the most current information.
The MTA is making this matter a very high priority. We are working with Ewald Consulting on a media campaign to work in conjunction with our summer outstate legislative visits. The Board believes that we can be most useful to the national effort by mobilizing our membership in a grassroots effort to educate our customers on the negative impact this will have on them.

MTA Joins Four Other State Associations in Comments on USF
In the first (what is hoped to be many) cooperative efforts among state telecommunications associations in the upper Midwest, MTA joined with state telecom associations in North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin to file comments to the FCC in opposition of the National Cable Television Association proposal to gut the Universal Service Fund and rural telcos ability to continue to provide basic telephone service as well as broadband. “The comments reflected our concerns in Minnesota that such a proposal would seriously damage rural telephony throughout the country,” commented Randy Young. “This is not the end of this, I’m afraid,” he added. It is anticipated that NCTA will continue its assault on small telco’s ability to compete by crippling the USF.
